The CSS (Central Superior Services) examination is conducted annually by the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) of Pakistan. It is the gateway to Pakistan's elite civil services, including the Pakistan Administrative Service (PAS), Police Service of Pakistan (PSP), Foreign Service of Pakistan (FSP), and other prestigious occupational groups. The written examination carries 1,200 marks, divided equally between compulsory subjects (600 marks) and optional subjects (600 marks). Each paper is 3 hours long. Subjects carrying 200 marks are split into two papers (Paper I and Paper II), while 100-mark subjects have one paper.

CSS Exam Stages

The five stages every CSS aspirant must clear

Stage 1

MPT (Screening Test)

Multiple-choice screening test. Candidates must pass this to proceed to the written exam.

Stage 2

Written Examination

12 papers over approximately 30 days. Total 1,200 marks (600 compulsory + 600 optional).

Stage 3

Psychological Assessment

Evaluates personality traits, leadership potential, and psychological fitness for civil service.

Stage 4

Viva Voce (Interview)

Panel interview assessing communication, general knowledge, and suitability for service allocation.

Stage 5

Medical Examination

Physical and medical fitness evaluation as per FPSC requirements.

Write a comprehensive essay on a given topic. Assessed on structure, argument, language, and depth of analysis.

Precis writing, comprehension, grammar, sentence correction, vocabulary, and paragraph writing.

General Science & Ability

100 marks · 1 paper

Everyday science, basic mathematics, analytical reasoning, mental ability, and current scientific developments.

Current Affairs

100 marks · 1 paper

Pakistan's internal affairs, international relations, global issues, and contemporary developments.

Pakistan Affairs

100 marks · 1 paper

History, geography, culture, politics, economy, and constitutional development of Pakistan.

Islamiat / Comparative Study of Major Religions

100 marks · 1 paper

Islamic teachings, history, jurisprudence. Non-Muslims may opt for Comparative Study of Major Religions.

Optional Subjects (600 Marks)

Select subjects from Groups I–VII totaling exactly 600 marks

Critical FPSC Rule: You cannot select two subjects from the same group. The only exception is Pure Mathematics (100 marks) and Applied Mathematics (100 marks) in Group II — these two may be selected together. Violating this rule will result in rejection of your application.
